Roulette RTP: How Much the Game Really Pays Back
In short

Roulette RTP is the share of bets a game returns over the long run. European is about 97.3%, American 94.7%, and French with La Partage up to 98.65%. How RTP relates to the house edge, how multiplier tables differ, and how to choose a high RTP.

RTP (Return to Player) is the share of all bets that a game returns to players on average over the long run. If a roulette's RTP is 97.3%, that means, in theory, out of every 100 units wagered, about 97.3 come back, and the remaining 2.7 is the house edge. RTP depends directly on the type of roulette, and it's worth understanding before you even choose a table.

How RTP Is Calculated

RTP is simply the flip side of the house edge: RTP + house edge = 100%. The figure is determined by the number of zeros on the wheel, because it's zero that takes a share of the expected value away from even-money bets. The more zeros there are, the lower the RTP.

RTP by Type of Roulette

VersionZerosHouse EdgeRTP
Europeanone (0)2.7%~97.3%
Americantwo (0 and 00)5.26%~94.7%
French (La Partage)one (0)~1.35%*up to ~98.65%*

* on even-money bets (red/black, even/odd, 1-18/19-36).

The difference between 97.3% and 94.7% is huge over the long run: American roulette takes almost twice as much. For more on the versions, see our article on types of roulette.

RTP in Live Roulettes with Multipliers

On tables like Lightning Roulette, part of the payout is redirected toward rare, large multipliers, so the base RTP on numbers is a little lower than the classic 97.3% (typically around 97.1% on straight-up bets). In exchange, you get a chance at a multiplier payout. It's a trade-off between stability and a potentially large payout.

What's Important to Understand About RTP

RTP is a statistical figure over a very long run, not a guarantee for a single session. In one evening you can win, or end up down by more than 2.7% - RTP doesn't describe individual rounds. Beyond RTP there's also volatility: outside bets give frequent small results, inside bets give rare big ones, but their overall RTP is the same.

How to Choose a Table with High RTP

The rule is simple: choose roulette with a single zero (European or French) and avoid American with two zeros. French with the La Partage rule is the best option in terms of return on even-money bets. Live providers most often offer the European wheel anyway.

RTP and Statistics

RTP sets the long-term maths, while statistics show the current picture at a table: non-appearance streaks, and the frequency of numbers and colours. The service displays this data for live tables in real time - how to read it is covered in our article on roulette statistics.

Remember: even a high RTP doesn't make roulette profitable for the player in the long run - the house edge is still there. Play responsibly.

Clear on how RTP links to the house edge. The French 98.65 percent point is useful.
